ABOUT THE CONTEST

The Youth Nature Phone Photography Contest encourages City of Boston Teens between the ages of 14-18 to take pictures of nature in their communities. The contest encourages youth to explore local urban wilds, or protected green spaces in our city. However, youth do not need to go to these areas to participate—youth can take pictures of nature right outside their homes or in any other safe and accessible public spaces.

Youth do not need to be experienced to participate! Below we have guides that will show youth how to take an award winning photo. We welcome youth of all skill levels!

THEME

Urban Greenery & Wildlife is the theme of the photography contest. Nature exists in many parts of our city. Our challenge to you is to take photos of nature within your community. There are many ways to do this—the tree you pass on your way to school, the birds in your backyard, or the blossoming leaves and flowers near your local school or community center. Boston also has Urban Wilds, which are protected woodland areas that exist within our city. Not only are urban wilds home to many different plants and animals, they help to protect our city from the effects of climate change by providing shade, producing oxygen, and storing flood water. The photos you submit could be from any part of nature in any area in the City of Boston including, but not limited to trees, plants, fungi, mammals, reptiles, birds, and landscapes. We highly encourage you to take a visit to an urban wild because they have so many plants, animals, and landscapes that you can photograph. We provide a list of Urban Wilds to visit at the start of the contest.
